This quick and easy Paleo Maple Chipotle Ketchup is the perfect dip or topping for so many of your favorites! Serve with burgers, chicken, baked fries, or as a dip for roasted veggies. A low FODMAP version makes it easy to digest. Gluten free, Paleo, Vegan.
My post on Monday about my kids eating personalities got me thinking about ketchup. I’m sorta like “meh” with ketchup. I’ve never especially loved it, and certainly not the way I love my homemade mayo! But, I was thinking about ketchup, and when I think about something like that it usually means a recipe will be coming along soon. And like with most of my recipes, it’s a selfish one. If I’m going to put the time and effort into something it had better be something I’m happy to see sitting in my fridge when it’s all over.
I experimented and consumed so much of this stuff in the process of creating it that I’m surprised I still wanted to eat it once it was done. Since it was for me, I wanted to make it delicious as well as IBS friendly which meant no onion and garlic. A challenge, yes! As you guys might already know I’m kind of a spice wuss, so the “chipotle” part of this adds subtle spice without being overpowering. However, if you’re going for a bit more heat you can easily add a little more Chipotle powder to this.
This week I’ve eaten it with meatloaf (recipe next week!) as a burger topping and a dip for my yuca fries. That reminds me I’ll also have to give you the recipe for the yuca fries I’ve been making – they are awesome!
Maple Chipotle Ketchup {Paleo & Low FODMAP}
Maple Chipotle Ketchup - Paleo & Low FODMAP
Ingredients
- 6 oz organic tomato paste
- 2 tbsp pure maple syrup adjust for you sweetness preference
- 2 tbsp raw organic apple cider vinegar if you are sensitive to this substitute white vinegar
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp chipotle chile seasoning I used McCormick Gourmet Collection - go up to 1/2 tsp for more heat
- 2 tbsp water
- *1/2 tsp onion powder
Instructions
-
In a bowl or tall container, combine all ingredients and mix well by hand. Add a bit more or less water to achieve the "dipping" texture you want.
-
Use as a dip or topping for roasted veggies and veggie "fries", burgers, meatloaf, or really anything you want. Store in an air tight container in the fridge. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes
*The addition of onion powder will make this no longer low FODMAP, however, if you can tolerate it, it's a great addition to the recipe!
Was that almost too easy for you? Don’t worry, I’ll give you a meatloaf recipe for next week with plenty of instructions. For now, enjoy your fun Friday and also this recipe!
Are you a ketchup fan? Ever made your own?
Do you like spicy dips or spicy things in general?
What do you have planned for this weekend? IF it doesn’t get snowed out, I have my half marathon this weekend!
suzysuzyheather says
I’ve never made my own ketchup, no. I’m a bit of a donkey in the kitchen. Although, your meatloaf recipe intrigues me! Good luck at your half marathon this weekend–I hope the snow stays away! 🙂
Michele says
Thanks! This is probably the easiest recipe on here as you just mix everything together 🙂 Meatloaf is not the most photogenic of foods but I hope to get some good recipe photos this week 🙂

I LOVE ketchup and am so excited that I found a whole30 friendly one last week! I’l be making it again tonight with burgers. This recipe looks great for after the whole30 is over!
Michele says
Still have to try that one! I can’t imagine it without sweetener but I definitely trust you that it’s good! This one got better in flavor I think as the week went on.
chasetheredgrape says
Do you think I could use chilli powder instead of chipotle seasoning? It’s not something we can get in the UK 🙁 or would you recommend leaving out entirely?
Michele says
Might change the flavor a bit but still would work!
Skinny Fitalicious says
I’m not a ketchup person. I just threw out a jar that was from 3 yrs ago and half full. Mustard is definitely my thing.
Michele says
Haha! My kids seem to eat ketchup by the gallon but I really don’t care for the store bought 🙂 This was an improvement for me.
The Cookie ChRUNicles says
I loved ketchup as a kid but somewhere along the line I stopped eating it. My son loves it so I buy the organic one from TJ. This looks really easy and delish with ingredients I have in the house – I have to make it! I love tomato paste. I can eat that straight up from the can. lol
Michele says
My kids love organic ketchup and I think it tastes the same as regular. This gives it a little kick for grownups 🙂
Amanda @ .running with spoons. says
I often joke that I eat my food with a side of ketchup because I looooooove the stuff. Sadly my stomach doesn’t necessarily agree, so I’ve had to start avoiding it or deal with the consequences. Probably a good reason to start making my own… Thanks for the recipe!
Michele says
I completely avoided onion and garlic with this recipe so maybe that might make it more digestible? I think it’s also the amount consumed with ketchup! I’m new to making it on my own but so far it seems like something that’s easy to experiment with.
SuzLyfe says
I was a mustard person for years and years and years, I think because of dieting. But now, I have fully reembraced the wonder that is ketchup!
Michele says
I really love honey mustard and I’ve made it paleo before! I don’t usually eat mustard plain on things though but it’s great to flavor sauces as long as it doesn’t overpower. Ketchup is a totally different ballgame!
Bridget says
I like ketchup… don’t love it, but it’s fine.
I LOVE spicy anything. I’ve never eaten anything that was too spicy for me.
Michele says
If you make this, definitely add more spice! You’ll love it!
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
I like ketchup, but I really only love it with certain things. I have never made me own. Thanks for the recipe!
Michele says
I’m the same. It’s fun and easy to experiment making your own!

Don’t tell anyone but: I hate ketchup! Always have. That said, the rest of my family loves it and I hate the crap in commercial brands. This will be great to try with them.
Michele says
Not the worst thing to hate! More for your kids!

Good luck on Sunday… hopefully the weather will cooperate!
Michele says
Thanks! I’m hoping it’s all cleaned up by Sat night and there’s no last minute cancellation. When I’m set on running I want to run!
Sue @ This Mama Runs For Cupcakes says
I am definitely trying this. I love ketchup but I hate the gross store bought stuff…so much sugar!!
Michele says
Agree the store stuff is meh, even the organic which tastes the same to me. You can play around with this and make it less sweet pretty easily. Hope you try!
Strength and Sunshine says
Damn, you beat me to it 😉 I still need to devise my own!
You know I love ketchup…I go through it….quickly 😉
But the last few weeks I have been cheating on my ketchup love and have been pouring BBQ sauce on everything! Haha!
Michele says
Haha! Get some tomato paste and go to town! I’m sure you’ll come up with an awesome one. I might have to try out a BBQ sauce. Not my favorite but would be great with pulled chicken or pork. Enjoy your weekend 🙂
Christa @ Living Unbalanced says
I am a ketchup fiend so thank you for this recipe! And yes please post the yuca fry recipe because those look so delish!

They were great and tasted like potato fries to me but maybe a bit lighter? Hope you try this 🙂

since i am a ketchup FEIN! I need this. Ahhh finally, another low fodmap option
Michele says
I bet some onion and garlic powder would make this even better but I actually didn’t miss it with the extra spice/smoky flavor. I’ve been wanting to dip everything in it! Also, I did receive the gift card yesterday, thanks!

This is perfect! I love ketchup, but not the store-bought kind with all the corn syrup etc. I could totally make this even here in China!

Hi – Just found your blog via Pinterest. Your recipes look great.
question: could you sub dates/date paste for the maple syrup to make it Whole 30?
Thanks so much
Michele says
Yes, absolutely. In fact I have a Whole30 ketchup recipe that uses dates here so you can get an idea of the amount of dates to use:
