This decadently sweet Gooey Fudge Brownie Pie will be loved by everyone who tastes it! A dark chocolate almond flour brownie pie filled with dark chocolate chips is topped with a rich topping for the ultimate Paleo brownie. Gluten free, grain free, dairy free, soy free.
I really hope you didn’t completely banish treats from your life yet (isn’t that what Mondays are for?) because this Gooey Fudge Brownie Pie is a good one. The timing of the New Year was a bit strange in that it leaves a whole long weekend that’s not quite here nor there. The holidays are over but you’re not back to regularly scheduled programming.
If it makes you feel any better, this chocolatey, gooey fudge brownie pie is 100% gluten, grain, dairy, soy, and refined sugar free. And if that doesn’t make you feel any better, eating it certainly will 🙂
Consider it one last hurrah before you’re reminded of all those pesky resolutions you made in the past month. Kidding. You can honor your resolutions and still have your gooey brownies on any day of the week, even Monday Jan. 5 without guilt. Just keep in mind that this dessert will disappear pretty quickly after it’s discovered, so act fast.
We had this on Christmas with my whole family, who by no means eats Paleo, and everyone loved it and couldn’t believe it was paleo.
According to my non-paleo family, SOME paleo treats have “that taste” that makes is recognizably paleo (I think this might be a coconut flour/honey/coconut milk issue?) but THIS recipe did not have “that taste.” All I know is that my mom wound up serving it with whipped cream and it was a big favorite. Trust me though, no whipped cream (or ice cream) is necessary on this for it to satisfy a rich dessert craving 🙂 Not saying it wouldn’t be awesome with it, but that is damn awesome without it!
Gooey Fudge Brownie Pie {Grain Free, Dairy Free, Paleo}
Gooey Fudge Brownie Pie
Ingredients
For the Brownie
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup organic coconut sugar
- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup + 1 Tbsp organic coconut oil melted and cooled to almost room temp
- 1/2 cup raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup blanched almond flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips homemade or Enjoy Life Brand
For the Topping:
- 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips homemade or Enjoy Life brand
- 2 Tbsp full fat coconut milk from a can
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9 pie dish generously with coconut oil. Alternatively, you can make this in a square pan as traditional brownies.
-
In a large bowl, cream together the eggs, coconut sugar, vanilla extract, and coconut oil until smooth.
-
In a medium bowl, combine the raw cacao powder, almond flour, salt, and baking soda.
-
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet and blend until smooth.
-
Finally, stir in the chocolate chips.
-
Pour the batter into the pie dish and use a rubber spatula to get every last drop in there!
-
Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until the center has just about set but is still a bit gooey. Watch closely so you don't overbake!
-
While the brownie bakes, make the topping:
-
In a small saucepan, combine the topping ingredients, and stir constantly while melting over low heat. Once melted and shiny, remove from heat and allow to cool.
-
You can spread the topping over the brownie pie while it's still a bit warm, but allow it to cool completely before cutting and serving.
-
This is one that tastes fudgier and chewier the longer you wait! Enjoy!

Do you prefer brownies by themselves or topped with ice cream or whipped cream?
Is anyone planning on starting a sugar detox, Whole30 or any type of cleanse or reset for the new year?
Do you feel like you’ve had “enough” treats this holiday season or are you still in the mood for them?
The Cookie ChRUNicles says
I love brownies plain or in a sundae! A nice fudgy brownie – with no nuts. Nuts always made me mad when added to brownies (even before I knew I had a slight nut allergy)….and as you figure, I am always in the mood for my desserts! They aren’t going anywhere.
Michele says
Ahh yes! I have never liked walnuts in brownies or cookies either and thought it was a “grown up” thing to eat them that way when I was younger, but, still don’t like them!
Charlene says
LOL same for me I can’t stand nuts in brownies!!
SuzLyfe says
I don’t think I’ve ever had enough sweets. That is also because I make sure to balance them out with savory elements because, you know, I have to be proactive.
Michele says
Agree that if you don’t go overboard you don’t feel much of a need to eliminate. Proactive and deliberate, I agree!
Sue @ This Mama Runs For Cupcakes says
Is there a recipe? It looks amazing!
Michele says
OMG just realize it had been deleted! It’s back in there now. Thanks for letting me know Sue!
Skinny Fitalicious says
This sounds great! I know what you mean about the Paleo taste. Coconut is not a flavor for everyone but I’ve grown to like it. I have to stay away from treats for awhile. Too many Paleo cookies…
Michele says
Just added the recipe back in there was it somehow went missing. I know what you mean about feeling the treat overload!
Emily @ My Healthyishlife says
I do the “gluten free” taste test with my family to determine if something really tastes good or if it’s just my imagination 🙂 Looks great!
Michele says
Thanks! Just added the recipe back into the post because it had been deleted, just an FYI 🙂
jillconyers says
I love chocolate! That said, I just realized this morning I didn’t eat a single bit of chocolate during the holidays. It wasn’t intentional! I’ll make up for it with your recipe. Yum!
Michele says
Awesome! I actually ate a lot of chocolate over the holidays between this, my banana chocolate muffins and just good old dark chocolate, and oh yeah, my hot chocolate recipe. I went a bit chocolate crazed, in a good way!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
EVERYTHING I cook everyone is always hesitant about. They think it must taste weird or I did something weird “allergy-free” spell to it, haha! Then they try it and are like WOW!
Seriously, I’m just using REAL unprocessed foods to make good delicious meals. Not scary 😛
(P.S. any type of brownie or cake thing, I LOVE to eat with a spoon, hahaha!)
Michele says
Allergy free spell, that’s funny! If it tastes good and it’s good for you there’s no reason to complain. It’s amazing what you can create with some experimentation and figuring out what works! And eating this with a spoon would definitely be good 🙂
danielle says
this looks amazing!!! i’d like to try this with whipped coconut cream – i’m a girl that likes toppings on stuff whenever i go there, lol.
i have certainly no intentions of doing any detox anytime soon, however i suspect after our honeymoon (jan 29th) then all of the Chinese New Year celebrating in Feb, i’ll be ready to remove alcohol from my life for a while. so in that sense, yes i’ll say that around March i’ll probably make our household booze free for a bit recover 😀
my major goal is to recover from the marathon to a point where i can run a little every day for a while – that would be so amazing!
Michele says
I definitely thought of that but…got lazy? Yup, that was it! But whipped coconut cream would be really fabulous on this! You have so much good stuff coming up, so excited for you 🙂
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
This looks awesome! I always heart Paleo treats. Enjoy the weekend!
Michele says
Yup it’s awesome when they come out tasting like the old favorites too! Enjoy the rest of your weekend 🙂
Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says
I made some very similar brownies the other day and they were great- I’ll need to give these a try too! I was thinking about doing a whole30 this month since I have never done one and this seems like a good time- coming off the holidays and no traveling/events coming up. But we will see- not sure if I want to give up wine for 30 days:)
Michele says
Definitely give these a try when you’re up for another round of goodies! When I did Whole30 I was coming off of some very unhealthy habits (tons of pretzels, chips, cereal, diet soda, ice cream) so it was really like a “detox” for me at that time! Now, and for you it would probably not be a huge deal, except maybe for the wine 🙂 Then again some people find that mentally it’s a great reset even when they already eat mostly paleo. Plus, if my husband completed it, anyone can I’m pretty sure!
Amanda @ .running with spoons. says
Ermagherd this looks amazing. I’m actually a fan of eating brownies without any sort of topping, and I don’t like mine to have nuts or anything like that in them either — it’s all about the pure chocolatey goodness. And I actually don’t feel too sugared out this year at all. I guess making treats a regular part of your life makes it easier to avoid going overboard during the holidays.
Michele says
I’m that way too with brownies. When I used to eat brownie Sundaes back in my high school days (afterschool job scooping ice cream, so this was often) I always had a pet peeve about the ice cream messing up the brownie texture! These are a lot of fudgey goodness, that’s for sure!
Lindsey C says
Oh yes, I had my fill of treats and I am DONE with them… although this looks fantastic and will be the first thing I make when sweets start to sound good again 😉
Now I’m back to eating clean and doing another whole30 January 12th. Couldn’t start on the first because I’ve got a wine tasting girls weekend next week that I plan to fully enjoy 🙂
Enjoy your last few mornings without the get-’em-out-the-door rush!
Michele says
Go you with another Whole30! I’m sort of curious how it would be for me to do it again at this point, and then again since I eat probably 90% Whole30 now I’m not sure what the point would be. I love that Whole30 can be worked around important social events! My husband started his last year the day after the Superbowl 🙂 Enjoy that wine tasting!
Lindsey C says
My goal is to get to the point that I’m eating whole30 90% of the time – you’re my inspiration!!
Michele says
Haha thanks! I’m so used to it now it’s really second nature. I feel different when I start eating too many things with sugar and additives. Strange! Never thought I’d feel that way and it’s amazing how you adapt. Now’s the perfect time to get back to Whole30 style 🙂
Meghan Arnold says
Never enough treats… thanks for sharing!
Michele says
Of course! Hope you try this 🙂
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says
I had so many sweets in the past two weeks that my teeth actually started to hurt and feel sensitive! So yes I am going to have to lay off for a bit…I say this now but then I read this recipe! Lol
Michele says
I hear you! It’s time for a little reset 🙂
Arman @ thebigmansworld says
I JUST took a pan of my Greek yogurt brownies out of the oven 5 minutes early after reading this because I’m hoping for some epic texture. This looks insane and love that it’s paleo!
Michele says
Way back before paleo I always made cookies underdone to get that gooey middle. Works with this too, hope yours came out fudgey 🙂
enticinghealthyeating says
Oh goodness, this looks good! Definitely keeping this recipe saved on pinterest. And I’m planning on doing a 1 month strictly whole, real foods diet change with a friend of mine in the next week. I’m so excited for it! No processed foods, no white or refined sugars, flours, etc. Trying to stick to as real and whole foods as possible. So ready!
Joyce says
hmmm i substituted olive oil for the coconut oil cause I didn’t have any and the batter turned out really dry, like unpourable, maybe even cookie dough like- is that how the batter was supposed to come out?
Michele says
No not at all. Ive never baked with olive oil so I’m not sure how that would change the batter. The batter for mine was typical brownie batter, thick but definitely pourable. Not sure what happened 🙁
Michele says
After looking over the recipe I believe there was a typo in the amount of oil and where it said “1/4 cup + 2 tbsp” it should have said “1/2 cup + 2 tbsp” so sorry but thank you for alerting me to this!!
Danika says
I added some extra ingredients which veered a little from paleo. It ended up tasting really good but I don’t like the grainy texture of the almond flour. Thumbs up for me!
My recipe changes:
instead of coconut flour – 1/2 cup stevia
extra 4 tbs imitation vanilla
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tbs maple syrup
extra 1/4 chocolate chips
Jocelyn says
Just made this and I kinda regret it.. Only because it’s SOOO good!! I can’t stop eating it ? I love finding Paleo recipes that taste good. Thank you!!
Michele says
Haha yes it pretty incredible how good Paleo treats can be! Hope you try a few more 🙂
Charlene says
would you be able to tell me the alternative measurements for coconut flour instead of the almond flour?? My daughter is highly allergic to nuts and so I refrain from using any nutty ingredients ;D
Michele says
It’s never easy to say since coconut flour is so different, but I typically will use about half.
Charlene says
Thank you!! I will try that and see what adjustments I may need to make from there. Thank you so much and I can’t wait to try these brownies!! 😀
Chelsea Gnida says
This was amazing!!! Can’t even tell it’s grain free. I plan to take it to a family dinner in a few weeks.
Michele says
Awesome 🙂
Mary P says
These were easy to make. Just found them on Pinterest. I was going to make your new chocolate pie from you’re new cookbook. But ran out of time, but will be making it for tomorrow. My kids really wanted me to make a pie for Pi Day. Can’t wait to taste them.
jessica stelzer says
Is there something I can used instead of Coconut sugar? Like Honey or Maple Syrup?
Cindy S. Drake says
Do you need to refrigerate this pie?
